Just got back from a few weeks in Jakarta, Indoneisa. That was an adventure and a eye opening experience for any westerner, and definitely worth all of the trouble to get there.
I left San Francisco aboard a Singapore Airlines Jumbo jet. I never been on a plane this large so I didnt know what to expect. The plane itself was huge and the number of passengers was overwhelming but SQ sure knows how to get a whole lot of people of the plane in an efficent manner. We left at 12:05 am for my 18 hour (no typo) to Singapore.
During the flight I was impressed at hour curtious and friendly the Flight crew were. What I realized quite immediately was that Singapore Airlines has quite a reputation in regards to their cabin crew. The singapore girls as they are known are anything unlike the normal 300lb american airlines flight crew who could careless about my comfort etc... I was amazed at the level of service even for the normal economy class flyers (such as myself).
About 20 min or so into the flight everyone got their steaming hot towel service as well as complimentary socks and beer.. nice combo I know. After about an hour we recvd our first meal, supper. I ate something with fish and noodles. Not bad but airline food is airline food, period. The rest of the flight to our first stop Hong Kong was uneventfull and smooth.
After arriving in Hong Kong some 14 hours later I had about an hour to disembark while the plane was getting refuelled. The Hong Kong airport was very modern and probably the nicest airport I had every been to. By the time I got off the plain got through security and into the transit mall I barely had time to do much more than make a quick phone call to my parents back in the states before getting back on the plane.
Ok back on the plane and I have a mere 4 more hours of sitting in a cramp economy seat before arriving in singapore. More of the same on board, great SQ service and not bad entertainment on the seat backs. I watched the Departed and a few episdoe of the Office before we arrivedin Singapore at 11am.
