More Trip Details

So getting back to my last post..

I arrived in Singapore at Changi Intl Airport. This airport was clean, even had free internet and wi-fi access. Didnt get much of chance to explore but it had the typical duty free shopping and anything else you could possibly need including many high end stores..

After arriving I had about 30 minutes to get to my next connecting flight on Singapore Airlines to my final destination, Jakarta on the island of Java. I got to the gate and went through the security check. This is different than the USA, the gates each have their own metal detectors in addition to the main terminal. I boarded a new Singapore Jet, I believe a 777 and took off (again) on time, for my 55 minute flight. This plane was way better than the 747 I took from San Fran as this one was brand spanking new. This plane was much more spacious even for us economy flyers. The plane was practically empty (guess not many people fly to Jakarta unless you live there). Once again the SQ girls managed to exceed all my expectations. We even got lunch on a 55 minute flight!! Try that United or U.S. Airways. Im lucky I get a bag of pretzels on a 3 hour U.S. flight.

Anyways on approach to Jakarta I managed to get a window seat view. This was certaintly exciting for me as it was hard to believe I was all the way in the south pacific, 20k miles from home.. On touch down I instantly began to see how different Indonesia was from my home. All I could see was green...

As we taxied to the gate I could see what looked like old delapitaded houses or slums that lined the fences surrounding the airport. I guess this is what I was reading about prior to coming to Indonesia was the great divide between the rich and poor. As I soon found out this was just the begining of an eye opening experience.

Out of the plane now it felt like someone just smacked me in the face. The humidity took over me instantly. Also I noticed smoke, not sure if it was pollution or the fact everyone smokes kretek here (a type of cigarette). Im sure lung cancer rates are high because of this. Welcome to the jungle baby! My first impression of the airport was a little uneasy, it felt like I was in a city like Baghdad. The airport was drastically different than Singapore, they barely had working phones. Everything here seemed to be way behind the times. The security was a joke. I mean corruption runs so rampant here anyone could just pay a guard or policeman and board a plane with anything imaginable.. pretty damn scary considering the world we live in...

more to come in a bit....
